韩秀是文革中的美国知青，1948年还是婴儿时被陌生人带回中国，此后32年经历了所有主要政治运动。8岁被当成靶子站在天安门广场的火圈里，17岁去山西插队，20岁在文革中逃亡新疆，险些葬身大漠。她的身世特殊，与周恩来和老舍有直接的命运交集。韩秀说，这是她第一次面向大陆背景的观众讲述历史，也将是她最后一次公开谈论往事。回忆是沉重的，但她说这是幸存者的责任。
